Are Web doctors or online doctors really necessary for my family?

When it comes to telemedicine the debate goes on about are web or online doctors really necessary for my family?  This is known as telemedicine or telehealth.   I feel I can make a very compelling case across the board that no matter if you are a single person, a family of 5, elderly, a parent, a child, have insurance or don’t, it is definitely worth having telemedicine.

Single person or family telemedicine:

Lets discuss the single person or individual that has telemedicine.  Lets say john starts to feel sick while at work.  John could have a recurring symptom for a chronic illness or simply the cold,  flu or rash etc.  Telemedicine allows John the ability to pick up the phone anytime he wants 24/7/365 and talk to an online doctors through online video conferencing calls or on his phone.  He can even use the app.  Now John can be picking up a prescription at the pharmacy of his choice usually within an hour.  That’s it!  On his way home he can stop by, medicate, and be healthy and at work tomorrow.  If John had kids he could do the same for them.

So lets talk about the kids, or the families that have telemedicine.  John has a couple of kids at a local school.  And as he was wrapping up lunch he got a call that little Johny Jr is coming down with something.  John simply needs to pick up the phone and describe his childs issues to his online doctor and he could be picking little Johnys medications up on the way home.  Little Johny Jr can now be medicated and at school tomorrow feeling like his normal self.  John, or maybe his wife, do not have to take the day off tomorrow to watch their sick son.

But, I have insurance:

Great, Telemedicine is not insurance and it is not meant to completely replace insurance (although 70% of the reasons you see your primary care provider can be treated over the phone or via web conferencing). However, it is a great addition to it.  Lets say a single version of John is paying $300 per month and his married version is paying closer to $600 or more for health insurance through work, but he does not have telemedicine attached to it.  When John starts feeling sick, if he is like most Americans, he does nothing.  He toughs it out and goes to work tomorrow feeling worse.  Maybe he self diagnoses and overloads on over the counters that just makes him feel even more tired.  In the end he gets another coworker, and his wife and kids sick.  Additionally his sickness last 4x as long as if he would have treated it.  Maybe it gets bad and we enter a worst case scenario where the entire family is missing work and school.

So, John had insurance but he didn’t use it because he didn’t want the hassle of the co-pays, deductibles, time off work, wait for an opening with his PCP, wait in a lobby full of sick people, etc.  So what did that $600 per month in insurance do to help him out?  In this case nothing!  In the end, John and his family pay $600 per month for insurance, they lost $120 each, per day, for missed work.  They ended up going to the doctor anyway after it got bad which cost $40 each in deductibles, and they had to pay for a babysitter for their sick little Johny Jr at $40.  In total, the sickness, that easily could have been easily treated by an online doctors (telemedicine), cost them $360 in doctors fees not including the frustration that they still have a $600 per month insurance plan to pay for.  The total they paid that month for their healthcare was $960.  If they had telemedicine through a provider like WebDocOnline the entire family could have received medication right at the onset when John felt sick at work.  Telemedicine only costs $14.95 per individual or for only $5 more John can add the entire family up to 5 people!

  • John could have eliminated all of these financial expenses, hassle, and sickness for the price of today’s lunch!
  • Johns expense from getting sick just one time: $360
  • A telemedicine membership would have eliminated those expenses for just $14.95 or $19.95 that month.  The entire year is only $179.4 for him or $239.4 for the entire family
  • If John had telemedicine he would have saved $180.6 and his family could have saved $120.6
  • Again this was for one sickness.  Most families average about 3 sicknesses per family per year!  $361.8 in savings!

I don’t have insurance:

Ill make this short:  ITS A NO BRAINER!  Telemedicine gives you access to an online doctor that can diagnose and treat over 70% of the reasons the average person sees their Primary Care Provider and over 40% of ER visits.   Yes, you can access your doctor online  or over the phone unlimited times, whenever you want, and get a diagnosis and treatment for your entire family if necessary for almost nothing compared to traditional health insurance. Although telemedicine does not replace insurance, it is a great alternative considering the bang for your buck if right now traditional health insurance is not financially feasable to you and your family.
